What is arthroscopic microfracture surgery?

For comfortable motion, our bodies have cartilage to cushion and cover the site where bones convene in the joints. If this cartilage is damaged, it can lead to joint discomfort or pain. Arthroscopic microfracture surgery is a common surgical procedure to correct damaged cartilage in the knee, alleviating joint pain for a more comfortable living.

What can I expect from the arthroscopic microfracture procedure?

Anesthesia will be provided to you for optimal comfort throughout the procedure. A small incision will be made in the knee where an arthroscope, a long, thin tube with a video camera on the tip will be inserted. This camera is able to feed video footage to a larger monitor so our orthopedic experts will be able to see a bigger picture of the joints within the knee for greater precision. Using the arthroscope as a guide, surgical tools will be inserted to create very tiny holes in the bone near the afflicted cartilage. These tiny holes made in the bone will discharge cells that can help establish new, healthier cartilage to replace what was damaged.

Why are arthroscopic microfracture procedures performed?

The main goal of an arthroscopic microfracture surgery is to keep damaged cartilage from worsening and in turn, preventing future complications such as knee arthritis or a complete knee replacement. By treating damaged cartilage, the amount of joint pain will also be significantly reduced.

What is the recovery process like for an arthroscopic microfracture?

Patients who undergo this procedure may need to use crutches to help keep the weight off of the operated knee between 6-8 weeks. By keeping weight off of the knee, healthier cartilage will be able to properly grow to replace the damaged cartilage. We strongly advise all patients who undergo this procedure to refrain from most physical activity for a few months.
