SLAP Repair

Shoulder pain can be difficult to experience on a regular basis. One cause of shoulder pain is a tear in the superior labrum anterior-posterior (SLAP). This tear is located on the ring of tissue that encircles the shoulder socket, where the bicep tendon convenes with the labrum. Angelo Mattalino, MD offers arthroscopic SLAP repair to ease shoulder discomfort and create an improved quality of life.

What causes a torn SLAP?

Two of the most common causes for a tear in the SLAP are injury and constant shoulder movement. Other possible reasons can be:

  • A car accident
  • Falling onto an arm
  • Forced pulling on the arm
  • Rapid movement of the arms when raised above the shoulder
  • Dislocated shoulder

For those who are engaged in sports that involve throwing or weightlifting, SLAP tears can be the result of forced or frequent shoulder movement.

What is arthroscopic SLAP repair?

One of the least invasive modes of surgery is arthroscopy. Arthroscopy utilizes a tube with a camera on the end–an arthroscope– to guide our orthopedic experts to detect and repair a torn SLAP. With a tiny incision, the arthroscope is inserted into the shoulder. Once the torn labrum has been located, our orthopedic experts will use the appropriate surgical tools to mend the tear. This procedure is performed under a regional and and general anesthesia for optimal patient comfort.

What can I expect following surgery?

When you may be able to resume most of your schedule depends upon the extent of the tear and the repairs made. Patients may not be able to drive themselves for about 4 weeks following their procedural date. Many regular activities such as eating and dressing must be performed with the un-operated arm. The amount of time you may need to refrain from certain leisurely activities such as playing sports as well as returning to work will be different for each patient; this will all be discussed in more specific detail with our orthopedic staff.

If a shoulder injury is hindering your contentedness with everyday life, contact us today and schedule your consultation appointment so we can help you determine if arthroscopic SLAP repair may be right for you.
