What is a CPM Machine?

CPM stands for “Constant Passive Motion,” and it is a machine used to rehabilitate a patient who has just had knee surgery. It is most commonly used on patients who have undergone ACL repairs or knee replacement surgery. The CPM machine keeps the knee moving and, thus, prevents the knee from becoming stiff or developing scar tissue that can impair the joint’s range of motion. CPM therapy also reduces swelling and pain, and the machine boosts the circulation, so more and blood nutrients reach the knee.

The patient doesn’t have to move their muscles, hence the “passive” in the name. The patient will lie on their back, and the therapist will place the affected leg in the machine. It will have padding to keep the patient comfortable and prevent the development of pressure sores. The CPM machine comes with a device used to control the amount and speed of flexion. Ideally, the amount of flexion should increase every day, but the patient or therapist can reduce the amount if the patient starts to feel any discomfort during the treatment. The machine will bend the patient’s knee for a set number of repetitions and at a set speed.

What is ACL Reconstruction?

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the four main ligaments in the knee that connect it to the tibia or shinbone. The ACL helps keep the knee stable and keeps the tibia from sliding in front of the femur. ACL injuries are quite common, particularly among athletes involved in sports like soccer, skiing, football, or basketball. Such injuries can range from mild to severe.

In an ACL reconstruction procedure, the surgeon will use a graft to replace the torn ACL. Simply stitching a severed ACL back together is usually not an option, for the stitches fail after a time. Replacing the ACL is usually a better option. Arthroscopic surgery allows the doctor to make smaller incisions and examine the knee for other problems.
