What is knee arthroscopy?
Knee arthroscopy is a technologically advanced surgical approach that allows our medical experts to get a glimpse of the joints within the knee without making large incisions. Arthroscopy is utilized to identify and remedy a variety of complications that can occur within the knees.
What can I expect from knee arthroscopy?
During this procedure, a tiny camera called an arthroscope will be administered into the joint of the knee. This camera is able to display the inside of the knee on a monitor which helps Dr. Mattalino and his team of orthopedic experts to identify and correct any problems found. A knee arthroscopy typically results in less patient discomfort since it requires very small incisions to be made, as opposed to some other open surgical procedures that require larger incisions. Smaller incisions also mean less of a recovery period, so that you may resume your schedule faster.
When is knee arthroscopy recommended?
- Extraction or correction of a torn meniscus
- Reconstruction of a tear in an ACL
- Removal of an inflamed articular tissue
- Removal of debris (broken off bone or cartilage loose in the knee)
- Improving complications in the kneecap
- Treating an infection in the knee
What can I expect in regards to the recovery process?
Following your procedure, you will be able to return home within 1 -2 hours. We strongly advise that someone drive you, as driving is not recommended immediately after surgery. Medications can be prescribed to alleviate some of the pain. Try to keep the leg that was operated on elevated for as long as possible during the first several days following the procedure. Ice can be applied to the area if swelling should occur. For more information on the recovery process, consult with our orthopedic experts today.
