Understanding the Knee Joint

Your knee connects the thighbone (femur), shinbone (tibia) and kneecap (patella), supported by cartilage, ligaments and tendons that work together every time you walk, run or bend your leg. The meniscus, a pair of C-shaped cartilage cushions, absorbs shock and stabilizes the joint, while ligaments like the ACL keep the femur and tibia properly aligned during movement. Articular cartilage lines the ends of the bones, allowing smooth, low-friction motion within the joint.

By weeks two through four, most patients walk unassisted and return to light-duty work, while structured physical therapy rebuilds strength and range of motion. Around the one-month mark, more active rehabilitation begins for patients returning to sport or demanding physical work, focusing on strength training and the balance and coordination needed to prevent future injury.

Most patients regain basic daily function within four to six weeks, while a full return to sport can take two to three months, depending on what was repaired. Elite or competitive athletes may follow a longer, more gradual re-entry plan built around their specific sport.

Preparing For Knee Arthroscopy

You may be asked to:

  • Stop taking certain medications or supplements that can increase bleeding
  • Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after surgery
  • Avoid food and drink after midnight the night before your procedure
  • Prepare a comfortable recovery area at home with ice packs, pillows and easy-to-reach essentials

If you smoke, quitting or reducing use before surgery can improve your healing process. Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet with adequate protein intake also helps your body recover more quickly.
