From weekend warriors to professional athletes, many people experience injuries and other conditions throughout their life. At Mattalino Orthopaedics in Phoenix, AZ, we believe injuries should not get between you and your fitness and lifestyle goals. You are warmly invited to learn if you are a good candidate for PRP injections.
What is PRP Injection Therapy?
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, therapy is a safe, effective, non-surgical treatment for chronic tendon troubles, such as Achilles tendonitis at the ankle, tennis elbow, jumper’s knee, and pain in the knee. It is also used to treat acute sports injuries, including knee sprains or pulled hamstring muscles.
Just like white blood cells and red blood cells are part of your blood, so are blood platelets. During this treatment, a small amount of your blood is drawn and processed in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets. Then, the PRP injection is given in the part of the tissue or cartilage that is damaged. Multiple injections may be required if the damage is severe. PRP therapy is ideal for patients who have mild to moderate osteoarthritis in the hip, knee, or shoulder, or have chronic tendonitis in the elbow or ankle.
Am I a Good Candidate for Platelet Rich Plasma Injections?
Nearly everyone is a good candidate for platelet rich plasma therapy. PRP injections may be recommended if:
- Surgical treatment is not desired or not an option.
- Other non-surgical treatments have been eliminated or failed.
- Physical therapy has been inadequate in pain reduction and improved function.
- Pain affects your day-to-day life.
- You are sensitive to NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
- You cannot find medication that provides adequate pain relief.
- You want to avoid using painkillers over the long-term.
PRP therapy may not be recommended for you if you have extremely severe issues. In this case, our doctor will probably recommend surgery to repair the damaged tissue. However, it all depends on the unique situation.
